Below is everything you need to know about transporting your wheelchair‚ categorized by its power source.

Important information for passengers traveling with a wheelchair (manual or powered)

Manual wheelchairs are accepted without restrictions. They are stored in the aircraft hold‚ separate from other luggage‚ and secured with specialized tie-down straps.

Bluebird Airways does not accept wheelchairs powered by spillable wet-cell batteries under any circumstances.

These are accepted only if the battery contains no free liquid‚ advance notice has been provided‚ and explicit prior approval for transport has been received.

  • You must submit the Mobility Aid Checklist to bookings@BlueBirdair.com at least 14 days before departure.
  • Insurance: We strongly recommend additional travel insurance for your device. The wheelchair is accepted only upon signing a Limited Release of Liability tag.
  • Arrive at the airport: Please arrive at the check-in counter 3 hours before departure.

In-flight Guidelines

  • The wheelchair and batteries are stored in the hold‚ secured with specialized tie-down straps.
  • Passenger must assure the batteries‚ cables and electronic components are protected from short circuits.
  • Even if removable‚ the battery should remain attached to the chair in its designated compartment‚ with the terminals protected against short circuits and the electrical circuits insulated according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
  • If removal is required‚ it must be performed by the user according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
  • Cabin crew must be informed of the location of the wheelchair and its battery‚ as well as any additional batteries.
  • Only one spare battery may be carried in the hold‚ provided it meets the same conditions‚ is packed in a hard case‚ separated from the wheelchair and the main battery‚ and clearly labeled.

Lithium-ion batteries are considered "Dangerous Goods". They are accepted only if they pass UN 38.3 safety tests and receive explicit prior approval.

  • Submit the Mobility Aid Checklist to bookings@BlueBirdair.com at least 14 days before departure.
  • Insurance: We strongly recommend additional travel insurance for your device. The wheelchair is accepted only upon signing a Limited Release of Liability tag.
  • Arrive at the airport: Please arrive at the check-in counter 3 hours before departure.

In-flight Guidelines

  • The battery must be removed from the chair and carried by the passenger into the cabin. The wheelchair frame remains in the hold.
  • Terminals must be insulated (e.g.‚ with tape) and the battery stored in a protective pouch or plastic bag.
  • Keep the battery under the seat in front of you or in the overhead bin.
  • You may carry only one spare battery in the cabin‚ provided it meets all the conditions above.
  • You must inform the Captain of the wheelchair's location in the hold and the seat location of the passenger carrying the battery.
  • Lithium batteries are hazardous and must stay in the cabin – under the seat or in the overhead bin. Maximum: one battery up to 300 Wh‚ or two batteries up to 160 Wh each.
  • Power Limits & Calculation: If your battery shows mAh (milliamp-hours)‚ use this formula to find the Watt-hours:

    Wh = V × Ah or Wh = V × (mAh / 1000)

Example: A battery with 48V and 5.2Ah equals 249.6Wh. This battery meets the requirements and is permitted for transport.
